BYZANTINE BRONZE CROSS-HALF OF VIRGIN MARY

Upper half of reliquary cross incised with figure of Virgin Mary and Christ. Mary in orans-pose, arms upright in prayer, monogram at either side, combined AΩ, nimbus around head, inscription above ΜΡ ΘΥ (Μητηρ Θεου – Mother of God; figure of Christ before her, detailed hatched nimbus around, body with incised alternating oblique decoration, at either side of his head inscribed ΗC-ΧC (Ησους Χριστος). Εx priv. coll. G.O., acq. PAN 2009; before coll. Anstock, Germany before 1965.
