GREECE, ATTIC BLACK FIGURE OINOCHOE

One-handled spherical vase with decoration of a mythological scene of Ariadne, daughter of King Minos of Crete, seated between Dionysos at the left, holding a drinking horn and a bunch of grapes as god of the wine, and Hermes at her right side with caduceus as messenger of the gods; wine tendrils inbetween.

Ariadne, holding a flower, is looking back to Dionysos, whom she married after her adventures with Theseus and the Cretan bull.

The scene is bordered by a double dotted row at the sides and a tongue design at the neck above; handle ridged.
